Why We Need Leaders, Not Just Managers, for a Healthier Workplace

The difference between a leader and a manager can often be subtle, but the impact they have on an organization and its employees is profound. We find ourselves at a crossroads, where having good leaders is becoming more crucial than ever. Toxic managers are driving valuable, hardworking individuals away from organizations, leading to dissatisfaction and high turnover rates. Why this is happening and explore how a shift towards leadership can make a world of difference.

Toxic Managers: The Hidden Dilemma

Toxic managers, with their rudeness and detrimental behavior, are a common plague in workplaces across the board. They not only make the workplace hostile but also drive away competent employees, leaving a detrimental impact on the company culture and its bottom line. So, what's baffling is why these toxic individuals continue to be recognized and even promoted.

The Toxic Conundrum

  1. Excellence at Work: Toxic managers, for all their faults, often happen to excel at their tasks. This excellence in their roles is their ticket to climbing the corporate ladder. Companies, after all, crave skilled individuals, and it's hard to let go of valuable talent.

  2. The Art of Sucking Up: Toxic employees, despite their unpleasant demeanor toward their peers, have mastered the art of courting favor with their superiors. They shower their bosses with compliments, run errands, and ensure their morning coffee is never missing. This tactic works, as everyone appreciates feeling special and important.

  3. Self-Promotion: Toxic employees are masters at promoting their own achievements. They don't shy away from tooting their own horns, even when taking credit for others' work. This self-promotion ensures their bosses are continually aware of their contributions, which is crucial in large organizations with limited time for individual recognition.

  4. Toxic Supervisors: A toxic manager is more likely to promote employees who share their negative traits, fostering a bubble where their toxic behavior is normalized and even valued. Ethical, competent employees can be seen as threats in such environments.

The Way Forward: Leadership Over Management

It's time for a change. To build healthier work environments, we must prioritize leadership over mere management. Here are some steps we can take:

  1. Not All Star Performers Make Great Managers: Recognize that excelling in an individual role doesn't guarantee success in a managerial position. Effective leadership requires emotional intelligence, which should be assessed before any promotion.

  2. Beware of Suck-Ups: Excessive flattery and pleasing behavior shouldn't blind us to a lack of genuine skills. Instead, evaluate an employee's performance independently and consider feedback from colleagues.

  3. Address Toxic Behaviors Head-On: Don't let toxic behavior fester. Investigate the underlying causes, provide coaching, and if necessary, let go of a toxic employee. Their short-term talent is not worth the long-term damage they can inflict on your organization.

It's high time to shift our focus from promoting toxic managers to nurturing true leaders within our organizations. By recognizing the importance of leadership qualities, we can create a healthier work environment where employees are inspired, motivated, and eager to contribute positively. After all, a company's success lies in its people, and leadership is the key to unlocking their full potential.
